Premiere and Streaming Details

The anime premiered on TV Tokyo on April 13th 2024. For fans outside Japan, Crunchyroll has the series with English subtitles as it airs. You can also watch it dubbed in English. Plus, if you’re on X/Twitter you can follow along with the Japanese broadcast as it happens.

Behind the Scenes

Leading the project is director Shigeyuki Miya who’s known for his work on Onihei. Veteran writer Ichiro Okouchi, famous for Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion, is in charge of putting the series together and writing the story. Bringing the characters to life is Tetsuya Nishio, who’s the main animation director. The scary monster designs come from the mind of Mahiro Maeda who’s well-known for his work on Shin Godzilla and Shinji Kimura helps create the world as the art director. And to top it off, the beautiful music is created by Yuta Bando.

Musical Sensations

British singer YUNGBLUD sings the opening song “Abyss,” and American band OneRepublic sings the closing song “Nobody.”

Manga Origins and Success

Kaiju No. 8 started as a manga in July 2020 on Shueisha’s Shonen Jump+ website, and people loved it right away. The first book came out in December 2020 and got lots of praise so they printed more copies. 

You can read the manga online with the title Monster #8 on Shueisha’s MANGA Plus. And Viz Media has the rights to release it digitally and in bookstores too.

The manga got popular and more than 4 million copies were out by September 2021. It got nominated for big awards like the Manga Taisho Awards, Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and Eisner Awards. It even won first place in the seventh “Next Manga Awards.” The story is growing too with a spin-off manga by Kentarō Hidano.
