Como 1907 will play in Italy’s top flight Serie A for the first time in 22 years this season. A revival of fortunes for the Royal Blues from Lombardy under former Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona star Cesc Fabregas has brought Como back to the promised land of Serie A. Their foray into the Italian top flight will come on the back of some truly incredible business in the Transfer Window by Cesc & Co.
The Italian outfit have most recently completed the signing of 19-year old Nico Paz, from Real Madrid. Nico joins on a permanent transfer, and Real Madrid will get 50% of any fee Como will receive for the player should they sell him on. Villarreal duo goalkeeper Pepe Reina and left back Alberto Moreno have joined on free transfers, as has France and Real Madrid legend Raphael Varane after a 3-year stint with Manchester United. Barcelona captain Sergi Roberto, who called time on his 14-year long stint with the Basque club recently, has also signed a 2-year contract with Como. Italian centre-forward Andrea Belotti comes in from Roma and brings his wealth of experience in the Italian top flight, with over 150 goals in the Serie A over the years.
For a newly promoted club to splash the cash, while not unheard of, is rare. In the cash-dominated world of modern football, it’s difficult for smaller clubs to remain in the top league. However, smart moves in the transfer market can make a world of difference. In the end, it comes down to how well a club is run. Under the ownership of the Hartono family, Como has made it from Serie D all the way to the top in 6 years. Current manager Cesc Fabregas has been at the club since 2022, starting out in a part-time coaching role. Fabregas, along with French legend Thierry Henry are minority stakeholders in the club. Como are hoping to establish themselves in the Italian top flight. On the back of this transfer window they just might spring a surprise this year.
