Manchester United kicked off the 2024/25 Premier League season in style at Old Trafford, seeing off a tough challenge from Fulham. New signing Joshua Zirkzee became the fourth Dutchman to score on his debut for United, joining an elite list of players.
The match saw plenty of chances for both sides, and the Red Devils were in-charge from the get go. Both goalkeepers, Andre Onana and Bernd Leno had plenty of action, with Zirkzee finding the back of the net in the 87th minute. Smart movement from Alejandro Garnacho set up the goal for United late in the game. Left back Noussair Mazraoui was the only new signing to start the game and was replaced by his compatriot Matthijs de Ligt in the 81st minute.
For Manchester United, the highly rated young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo ran the game from the middle, with 13 successful duels and 4 completed runs with the ball. The youngster set the pace in the game for United, picking up exactly where he left off last season.
For Fulham, a debut was handed out to Emile Smith Rowe, signed this window from Arsenal on a permanent deal. Marco Silva’s men, despite losing three of their starting eleven from last season, held their own at Old Trafford. Fulham looked dangerous on the counter, but lacked conviction in the final third. A shocking defensive error from Calvin Bassey in the final minute should have been punished by Rashford and Garnacho, but the Argentine completely fluffed his lines in front of goal.
For Manchester United fans, this should be the ideal start to their Premier League campaign. Joshua Zirkzee’s goal was the difference between United and Fulham in this encounter, and Erik ten Hag’s side will look to build on the win as the season goes on.
